Miami Beach condo building collapses mid-demolition, injures one

The incident shut down traffic on Collins Avenue between 41st to 63rd streets

An empty 13-story condo building at 5775 Collins Avenue collapsed during routine demolition work Monday morning in Miami Beach, shutting down traffic and leaving one individual injured.

Although the 1960s-era Marlborough House structure had been issued a standard demolition permit, a developer’s earlier request to bring down the building via rapid implosion was denied, said Miami Beach Police via Twitter.

One construction worker was confirmed injured and was transferred to Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition, according to a statement from the city. Emergency crews are currently on the scene to secure the area and search the site for additional victims.

The collapse filled the immediate area with dust and scatter debris across Collins Avenue, initially shutting down all traffic between 41st and 63rd streets.

The roadway has since reopened from 41 to 55 streets while the southbound lane remains closed from 63 Street. Residents who live between 56 and 58 streets will not be able to access their residences at this time.

Marlborough House was in the process of coming down to make way for a new 17-story, 89-unit condo tower from Brazilian developer Jose Isaac Peres.

Winmar Construction, the project’s general contractor, said it would release an official statement regarding the incident Monday afternoon, reported the Miami Herald.

This post will be updated as more information becomes available.
